Great Color links

Hello,

Here are some really good links on color from James Gurney's site and some other sites. The last two links cover more traditional color theory principles. There are many sections on color which cannot be covered in one class. So if you're hungry to read up on these it is worthwhile. :)

Coming soon in Week 8 : Refinement and Lighting

refined value.....but kind of bland

Adding a little drama to spice it up. Using light as a
focal point for the subject.
This is what's coming up after Week 7. Taking the value swatch thumbs and really putting the hammer to the nail!

Week7 Preview

Two value system. They incorporate both line and shapes to
convey rhythm.

4 value system

Since we're a class ahead on the next topic, we will go back and re-emphasize some key ideas from last week. Here are some more examples from my personal projects on how the ideation and process for a painting is created. See you Monday!

Week 6- Value Comps Swatches

Hello Guys,
So here is a breakdown of what we went over last night and also I wante to cover any loose ends. I went ahead and started on some fresh value swatches using the methods we discussed in the last class. Here are a few examples of different value swatches using similar steps. Keep in mind that this method of approach from a production standpoint is more "exploratory" where the objective is creating a mood using shapes and conveying an idea of how the environment will look and feel. After this stage, we can specify the design with specific layouts. We'll look at the other process in the next few lessons where we take an established design and add value to it.
Example 1:
A. I lightly laid in a perspective grid to establish the space to guide my shapes. Starting with a midtone background, loose sketches are drawn in with a midvalue. I chose a angled composition for this comp. Quickly determine where light falls and shadow fills. At this stage, think of using graphic shapes rather than "render". We're more concerned about designing the page first.
B. By adding darker shapes, I establish shapes that are closer to the viewer. The focal point is off to the left so keeping focus on design, I try to relate foreground structures to it by "helping" point the direction into the payoff view. I'm being less subtle with these to illustrate the idea. Start adding the darkest value and the lightest value to achieve contrast.
Don't think about rendering at this stage, it's more about organizing your shapes within the space to read. Also, Flipping your images or looking at them upside down will tell you if the comps are balanced.
C. After refining the shapes a bit more, these will be sufficient enough at this stage to get an idea of how the environment will play out.
The following examples are done with similar steps, but I went with a less sketchy start with this one and kept it clean. Again, one thing to stress at this stage is that I'm not concerned with establishing atmoshpere yet. Just design.
Ok, see you next week!

Some sketches

Hi all,

Here are some sketches done looking at reference.

These ranged from 5-10 minutes each, and are done with a ballpoint pen. I sketched out the major shapes first without thinking about the smaller details. After I was happy with it, I started to flesh out little bits of detail here and there, seeing where it would help make the image read better or would help the perspective read clearer.

I didn't really bother indicating all the details from the reference, just ones I thought were relevant.

10 Min.
10 Min.

5 min. You can see I didn't get too far with this one.
Hope this helped!

Layout Demo

Hi all

I finished up the line sketch that was started last week in class. I fleshed out the layin using photoshop. I tried to indicate where there would be small details off in the distance, and added some extreme foreground elements.

I felt the sketch was lacking something in to make this cavernous space feel large. Hopefully with the addition of the railing and walkway, the details off in the distance are pushed away further.

Here is the layout:

As a side note, I grouped the image into the foreground, middle and background with a bit of value. Hopefully this makes the different elements easier to parse.

Cheers!
